Steve Hofmeyr (born 29 August 1964) is a South African singer, songwriter and actor and an activist for Afrikaner rights in South Africa, and has been involved in several controversies throughout his professional career.

Personal life

Hofmeyr married actress Natasha Sutherland, whom he had met on the set of Egoli: Place of Gold in 1998, they had two sons, Sebastian, born 13 December 2001 and Benjamin, born later. Hofmeyr also has three other children by other womenThe couple was divorced after reports of numerous affairs dominated Hofmeyr's time in the spotlight in 2008.
In December 2008, Hofmeyr allegedly assaulted Esmaré Weideman, editor of Huisgenoot, a popular Afrikaans magazine, by pouring a cup of cold tea over her at the Miss South Africa finals. He was said to have blamed her and two other journalists for his divorce from Sutherland. Miss Weideman subsequently dropped her accusations.
On 19 December 2013, Hofmeyr was arrested in Bronkhorstspruit for driving at 169 km/h in an 80 km/h zone and was released on Bail of R500. He was subsequently fined R10,000 in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on 23 January 2014.
Hofmeyr married Janine van der Vyver on 26 January 2014. In 2008, Janine van der Vyver, a fitness instructor, revealed they had been seeing each other for 10 years.
Hofmeyr's grandfather was Steve Hofmeyr Sr., a leader in the Ossewabrandwag.

Controversies

In January 2007, there were reports that one branch of the News Cafe restaurant chain would not play Hofmeyr's song Pampoen ("Pumpkin"). The managing director of the company that owns the franchise denies that this is company policy and points out that many Afrikaans acts, such as Karen Zoid and Arno Carstens have performed at News Cafe.
On 12 May 2011, Hofmeyr released the lyrics to his new song called "Ons sal dit oorleef", which means "We will survive this". The song is controversial, because Hofmeyr has threatened to include the word "kaffir" (a very derogatory name for the black population of South Africa) in the lyrics of the song. Hofmeyr removed the offensive word in his song, citing that the word would offend his black friends and colleagues.
In 2011, he made public that he supports the organisation "Expedition for Afrikaner Self-Determination" (Onafhanklike Afrikaner Selfbeskikkingsekspedisie, OASE). OASE describes itself as an advocacy group for Afrikaner self-determination in compliance with the international law and the guidelines of the international community. He is an avid pro-Afrikaner but mentioned that he maintains a moderate political stance in an OASE public relations video.
Hofmeyr was heavily criticised after performing the former South African national anthem, Die Stem, at a cultural festival known as Innibos in Nelspruit in July 2014. He went on to perform the anthem on international tours, and encouraged South Africans to continue singing it, stating that it did not contain any form of hate speech.
In October 2014, Hofmeyr wrote and published a tweet stating that he believed that black South Africans were the "architects of apartheid" on his public Twitter account. This prompted a significant public backlash. One of Hofmeyr's critics was puppeteer Conrad Koch and his puppet Chester Missing, who launched a campaign calling on companies to stop sponsoring Hofmeyr. On 27 November 2014, Hofmeyr failed to acquire a final protection order against Koch and his puppet in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
Hofmeyr has given statements indicative of an apartheid denialist  which has led various journalists and public figures to label him a "disgrace to South Africa".

JOHANNESBURG – Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr is considering a career in politics if he receives a million votes on a Facebook page created for the purpose.
Earlier this year, Hofmeyr vowed to represent the interests of his followers on a political level if the target is reached.
The page was created last week with his permission.
The Facebook group called, Miljoen Stemme Vir Steve (A million votes for Steve), has received support from 299,934 people in just three days.
In a statement posted on his personal Facebook page, Hofmeyr said he wants to be honest about how he wants to change the lives of farmers, Afrikaners and South Africans.
The brainchild of the initiative, Sakkie Van de Skyf, asked Hofmeyr in January on a local radio station whether he would enter politics and Hofmeyr responded, “Only if I get a million votes.”
Van de Skyf said it’s important that Hofmeyr represents what he calls “his people’s interests.”
“The moment we can prove to Hofmeyr that we do have a million supporters he will go into politics.”
However, there is also another Facebook group called, Miljoen Stemme Teen Steve (A million votes against Steve), which has only received the support of 666 people.

Hofmeyr’s ‘Afrikaans is Groot’ gig continues

The Afrikaans is Groot (AIG) concerts in Pretoria will go ahead as planned, regardless of the ANC Youth League’s planned protest, say organisers.
“With the release of this statement there are still conflicting reports on the status of a planned protest action by the ANC Youth League in Pretoria,” said AIG spokesperson Barnard Beukman today.
“Afrikaans is Groot however wants to confirm that the concerts are going ahead, protest action or no protest action.”
He said the AIG organisers would not be intimidated and were working full steam ahead to make a success of each concert.
The ANC Youth League had planned to march against Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr, who was due to participate in the AIG events at Moreleta Church between November 14 and 22.
Hofmeyr has been in the spotlight following tweets about apartheid.
In October, Hofmeyr tweeted: “Sorry to offend but in my books Blacks were the architects of Apartheid. Go figure.”
The tweet caused a stir on social media and Hofmeyr was accused of being racist, stupid, and a peddler of ignorance.
A column in The Times by ventriloquist and comedian Conrad Koch questioned supermarket Pick n Pay and Land Rover for sponsoring the AIG festival.
ANCYL in Tshwane called on progressive Afrikaners to reject people like Hofmeyr, who disseminated “racial venom”.
The organisation said while they fully respected the right of all national groups to practise their cultures in peace, they wholeheartedly condemned the statements made by Hofmeyr.
“We call on progressive Afrikaners to reject and isolate those who insist on spreading racial venom,” said ANCYL spokesperson Justin de Swardt stoday.
“... We cannot allow racism to occur without consequence and it is thus critical that we make this call for the isolation and confrontation of racist elements.”
Beukman said effective security measures were in place at the concert venue.
“Therefore an appeal is made to concert goers to exercise their right to come and experience the concerts they paid to attend,” he said.
“Currently there are also conflicting reports on if the ANC Youth League’s application at the Tshwane metro was within the prescribed time period.”
AIG trusted that the authorities would consider the application within the prescribed regulations.
“AIG will be in [continuous] communication with concertgoers and keep them abreast of any new developments on this issue,” said Beukman.

MGG Productions powers Afrikaans is Groot

The FOH control was via a Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi3000 connected with RealTime Rack
20 March 2015
South Africa - MGG Productions installed JBL VTX line arrays, Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers and Soundcraft Vi Consoles at the Afrikaans is Groot Music Show that was held recently, providing sound reinforcement for some of the most popular artists in the South African music industry today.
Organised by Coleske Artists, the Johannesburg leg of the annual music concert held at the Moreletapark Auditorium in Pretoria that seats more than 7000 people, saw nine sold-out shows.
MGG Productions were the sole technical suppliers for audio and lighting, with their project manager Denzil Smith and his expert team putting in many hours of hard work toward this popular event. Local Harman importers and distributors Wild & Marr were on-hand to provide additional technical support and EASE plots to ensure an even distribution of sound for the audience.
The audio system featured a total of 32 x JBL VTX V20 line array elements, 12 per side for the main PA, a centre-hang of eight JBL VTX V20, 10 x VT 4886 subcompact line array elements for front-fill and a combination of G28 and S25 subwoofers in cardioid formation.
An original sub design with two columns of 6 x S25 subwoofers in cardioid formation had to be abandoned because of sight line issues.
Apart from 25 channels of wireless in-ear monitors; JBL VTX F15, F12 and SRX 712 loudspeakers were used for on stage reinforcement.
All loudspeakers were powered by V-Racks, which included I-Tech 12000HDs and I-Tech 4x3500HD models featuring Crown's DriveCore technology. System management and control were handled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager software.
The FOH control was equally impressive with Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi3000 connected with RealTime Rack. The Vi6 controlled all band inputs and additional multitracks for playout from Pro Tools. This was connected via an additional MADI card. The Vi6 was also used to trigger scenes to the Vi3000 via midi (and HiQnet which triggered the RealTime Rack). The Vi3000 was used to handle vocals and sub scenes.

Hofmeyr costs 'Afrikaans is Groot' concerts

JOHANNESBURG - Pick n Pay and Jaguar Land Rover South Africa have decided not to renew their sponsorship of the Afrikaans is Groot (Afrikaans is big, AIG) concerts, Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday.
AIG spokesman Barnard Beukman thanked the companies in a statement saying, “Afrikaans is Groot (AIG) thanks two sponsors, Pick ‘n Pay and Landrover, for their contribution to Afrikaans music. Both indicated that they will not be sponsors this year. Through their AIG-sponsorships they made a huge contribution to the development of Afrikaans music.”
Beukman added that AIG was looking forward to an imminent announcement of the 2015 sponsors.
Last year, both companies had said they would review their sponsorship of the festival following controversial comments by one of the main performers, Steve Hofmeyr.
Jaguar Land Rover SA media relations manager Lesley Sutton, said the company would focus on its international ties with the Rugby World Cup and the Bloodhound SSC world land speed record.
Both take place at the same time as the Afrikaans is Groot concert, said Sutton.
Pick n Pay, a sponsor since 2012, said it had informed the concert organisers a few weeks ago of its decision.
In October Hofmeyr caused a storm on social media when he tweeted, "Sorry to offend but in my books Blacks were the architects of apartheid. Go figure".
AIG has taken a stance of implicating that the artist is engaged purely to perform and is required to stick within the mandate of the program saying, “Their participation is subject to an agreement not to involve AIG directly in controversial issues. On stage they also have stick to the prescribed programme of the production.
“AIG’s only involvement with the artists is the performance of their music. Therefore it is not the function of AIG to get involved or comment on the personal or public viewpoints of any artist," Beukman said.
Beukman said their goal was only to further Afrikaans music, and as such Hofmeyr would still perform at their concerts.
Comedian and ventriloquist Conrad Koch and his puppet Chester Missing questioned the companies' relationship with Hofmeyr in a series of tweets and on a blog.
Dan Roodt on behalf of Hofmeyr, unsuccessfully sought a protection order for Hofmeyr against Koch and the puppet.
